Dressed up with nowhere to go

As a new mumma it can be hard to look after myself. Getting dressed in something nice is often low on my list of priorities, let alone getting dressed at all! Putting something nice on even if you’re not leaving the house is a simple way to self-care.  Don’t get me wrong – clothes can’t address all the challenges in life. But spending some time on yourself in that small way can really make a difference to your frame of mind. So how to find that spark of morning motivation? Well here are some ideas.

A blogger I’ve followed for a while is Andrea Michelle aka Fox In Flats. I really like Andrea’s Style Dares. She ‘dares’ you to step out of your fashion comfort zone through month-long challenges designed to get you out of a style rut or just try something new.

Andrea’s DAREcember brings the fashion fun to the festive season. The idea is to post photos with the hashtag #DAREcember so all the dare photos are findable and you can connect with other ‘dare-ees’. You can see eachother’s ideas and be encouraged and inspired. I played along with DAREcember back in 2014 and loved it. It became something to look forward to every day.

Another kind of fashion challenge that’s a little less structured is Lindsey Cheney’s ‘What I Wore Wednesday‘ or WIWW. Lindsey is the author of blog The Pleated Poppy. Through WIWW Lindsey shares what she’s worn through the week. She started it as motivation to get out of her PJs and house clothes more. As a mum of three who home-schools and works from home, Lindsey found it really inspiring to share and hopes it inspires others to get more creative with their wardrobe.

Now I’m no longer working full time I’m thinking I should do something like this again. It’s rare that I feel excited about what I’ll wear on a given day and I’d like to get more creative again.

Here are some shots (and the little dare guide) from my DAREcember. P.s. Looking back at these photos makes me tempted to chop my hair off again!

What I wore – Relaxed sunny denim

Now I’m a mum it can be a challenge to put together an outfit that is comfy yet doesn’t scream “pyjamas”. Well, challenge accepted.

This little combo is a favourite of mine. I got this light denim dress from Big W (Emerson brand). It’s a nice length, light-weight and breastfeeding friendly. Some people might not like the ‘shapeless’ shape but I love it. I used to wear a lot of shift dresses before I had the bub and now can’t because I need to whip the girls out regularly. Even though it’s been a blessing to be able to breastfeed, I seriously miss being able to wear pieces that don’t have to open at the front. This dress is a bit of both worlds – pre-baby style and practical mumma style – so it’s pretty nifty!

And my beloved canary yellow Salt Water sandals make the outfit look finished (with a bright sunshine-coloured full stop!).

What I wore: simple grey day

I love comfy clothes and my work outfits are usually quite simple and fuss-free. I love soft, flowing fabrics and boots are a must in winter. I’m also a real ‘jeans girl’ and I wear them as much as I can to work – you just have to be sure to make them look slightly dressy to make it work-appropriate!

So, here’s a really good example of a go-to work outfit suited to a cold, grey day in the office.

What I’m loving: July favourites

July has come to a close and I wanted to do a little recap of all my favourite things this July.
So, here’s what I’ve been loving this month.

The Devil Wears Nada (by Miss Ashleigh) & Don’t Mess With OPI (by OPI).

Cream polishes are always what I gravitate towards. These two colours are so beautiful – the perfect nude and a creamy, calm take on green.

Maybelline Lumitouch Concealer in Ivory & Revlon Balm Staines.

I have just run out of my Lumitouch Concealer but I will be buying another! This concealer is light, brightening and has great staying power. I use it to even out my skin tone before applying my BB Cream. I get really red skin, so it helps with that. And these Balm Staines from Revlon are insane. I love that they apply like a lip balm but stay like a stain. They wear away quite naturally and keep your lips moisturised. Magical!

Berocca Performance effervescent tablets in Original flavour & Centrum for Women multivitamin.

I’ve been taking multivitamins each day for the past month or so and I’ve noticed a big improvement in my mood, skin and general feeling of wellbeing. I’ve also had less headaches – this is good for me as I suffer from migraines quite regularly.

Imperial Mandarins & Flake Snow chocolate bar.

I’ve fallen back in love with mandarins! There seems to be nothing else I crave of an afternoon in the office. Imperial are my favourite. Now, I love good old Flakes but how about this… take a flake, make it white chocolate and then cover it in milk chocolate… mmm yum! I’m a big chocolate girl and this has been a yummy snack of an afternoon some days.

The Newsroom television series

Two shows have been keeping me enthralled this month – The Newsroom and River Cottage Australia. After I go over the fact that the guy from Dumb and Dumber (Jeff Daniels) was the main – and very serious – character of The Newsroom, I really got into it. It isn’t designed to be very realistic and more looks at if we could ever do the news right, it might look something like the crew on this show. Even though it does make liberal use of hindsight, being set in real life a few years ago, I’ve enjoyed watching a show that doesn’t have huge amounts of horror, extreme drama or lewd content. It’s been nice.
Speaking of nice… I have always been a sucker for River Cottage. It’s a show about sustainable living, community and living on the land. When they announced that the British show was going to plant an offshoot in Australia, I nearly peed my pants! My husband and I have been watching the brand new show and we absolutely love it. It’s wholesome, dock style TV and it’s good for the soul I’d say.

Housey things:

My homemade terrarium

I can’t list my monthly favourites without including my beloved little terrarium (which is still alive! yay!). You can read a post on how I made it just over here.

Colourful pants these are from Sussan.

Throughout this winter, I’ve been trying to do all I can to lift my mood and make the most of a time I usually really don’t like. My husband is convinced I’m a lizard (which is why I can’t regulate my body temp or keep warm in the winter). Anyway, I can’t make the days warmer but I can add sunshine to what I’m wearing. Coloured pants have now become a thing in my wardrobe. Wearing crazy bright pants makes me smile and I always get loads of compliments. So, here’s to you coloured pants.

What I wore: modern medicine woman

The title of this post is a bit funny but this outfit reminds me of that old show Dr Quinn: Medicine Woman. Remember her? She was so classic. So beautiful!

Anyway, onto my outfit…

What I wore today: Casual Friday

Thank God it’s Friday! What a week… Some big changes are happening in my professional life so I’m excited and scared at the same time. Today, I thought I’d take full advantage of the phrase “casual Friday” and dress really comfy. So, here’s what I wore today.

What I wore today: snuggly bug

The sun finally came out today so we took the opportunity to go for a much-needed walk. The sun was so beautiful! I’d almost forgotten what the sky looks like without big grey clouds.

Today I wore one of my favourite combinations – tights (x2!), boots, tunic and scarf. It’s like my favourite outfit equation!

Anyway, I was really cosy and loving being outside feeling snug as a bug. Oh and the air was still quite icy so that’s why my face looks a little red!

What I’m wearing today

My man and I got married this year and we moved into our new little place just after that. I’m such a procrastinator but I used the big move as a reason to sort through my clothes and chuck a whole lot out. This meant I said goodbye to lots of my winter wardrobe.

Over the last couple of weeks, I’ve been buying bits and pieces to rebuild my warm clothes collection and this weekend I found the nicest jumper in the weirdest of places. This green sweater tunic thing is so freaking nice! It’s thin, woven with Merino Wool and super warm and soft – and I found it for $30 at Target (bargain!) I couldn’t wait to wear it today, styling it with some simple little additions. My style is very simple and this outfit is so ‘me’. Enjoy!
